Description:

Prof. Ahmed Elsheikh is a highly accomplished academic and industry expert, renowned for his contributions to both structural and biomedical engineering. His educational journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alexandria, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1985 with distinction and honors, an achievement that foreshadowed his impressive career trajectory. Pursuing his passion for engineering, he went on to complete a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Alexandria in 1988. His academic excellence and dedication led him to one of the world’s leading institutions, the University of Cambridge in the UK, where he achieved his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering between 1989 and 1991. This advanced training at Cambridge equipped him with the skills and insights that would define his future in both academia and biomedical innovation.

After a brief period in the engineering industry, He transitioned to academia, where he has spent most of his professional life. Currently, he is a distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Liverpool, a position he has held since 2010. His contributions at Liverpool have spanned various significant roles, including serving as Chair of Biomedical Engineering since September 2019 and, prior to that, as Dean of the School of Engineering from November 2013 to September 2019. During his tenure as Dean, He played a pivotal role in shaping the university's engineering programs, fostering a culture of research excellence and innovation, and enhancing the integration of cutting-edge technologies in the engineering curriculum. His impact extends beyond his administrative roles; as Professor of Biomaterial Mechanics, he has conducted pioneering research on the mechanical properties of biomaterials, with a particular focus on applications in ophthalmology.

His work in this area has advanced understanding of how mechanical forces interact with biological tissues, contributing valuable insights that bridge engineering with health sciences. In addition to his academic work, He is deeply involved in advancing healthcare technology. Since January 2021, he has served as Chief Scientific Officer at OCUWELL Limited, a part-time role based in Liverpool. At OCUWELL, he leads the development of affordable medical devices, with the goal of making advanced healthcare solutions more accessible to underserved populations. This role exemplifies his commitment to translating academic research into practical solutions that address real-world healthcare challenges. His focus on affordable device development aligns with his overarching goal of improving healthcare accessibility and effectiveness, particularly in the field of ophthalmology.

His research interests are multifaceted, covering areas such as medical device innovation, ocular biomechanics, and numerical simulation of mechanical responses in biological tissues. His work on ocular biomechanics has been particularly impactful, as it involves the study of how mechanical forces affect the eye's structural integrity and function. Through detailed material characterization and computational simulations, he has contributed to a better understanding of ocular tissue behavior, which is crucial for developing safer and more effective treatments for various eye conditions. His expertise in numerical simulation allows him to create models that predict how the eye responds to different mechanical actions, an approach that has significant implications for improving clinical practices and outcomes in ophthalmology.Beyond his roles at the University of Liverpool and OCUWELL Limited.

He has been a dedicated member of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre since April 2012. This prestigious center is a collaborative effort between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, aimed at advancing research and innovation in eye health. His involvement with NIHR underscores his commitment to bridging engineering and medical research, with a focus on translating scientific discoveries into clinical advancements that benefit patients. Through this affiliation, he has contributed to numerous projects that address critical healthcare needs, reinforcing his reputation as a leader who seamlessly integrates engineering with medical science.

His career reflects a unique blend of technical expertise, academic leadership, and a passion for healthcare innovation. His work has had a profound impact on both the academic and medical communities, influencing the development of new technologies and contributing to the body of knowledge in biomedical engineering. His contributions to medical device development, particularly in ophthalmology, showcase his ability to apply engineering principles to solve complex biological problems. With a career dedicated to improving healthcare through engineering, He continues to inspire the next generation of engineers and researchers, ensuring that his legacy of innovation and excellence endures for years to come.
